Wearing contact lenses

Here are a few useful tips in how to insert/remove contact lenses.

 BEFORE HANDLING CONTACT LENSES

Hygiene is paramount in successful contact lens wear, therefore:-

1..Before handling contact lenses, always wash your hands thoroughly.

2. Hands should be free of all perfumes, creams and lotions.

3. Trim long and rough fingernails, these can often damage contact lenses.

4. Do not remove lenses from their containers with sharp objects, these might damage the lenses.

INSERTING THE LENSES

Make sure the lens is not inside out. This can be done by checking the profile of the lens.

The profiles might resemble a cup or a saucer. The more inwardly curved  profile (cup) is the correct shape to insert into the eye.

If you insert a lens that is inside out, it may not be as comfortable as usual and your vision may be affected.

To insert:
1. Place the right lens on the tip of the right index finger.
2. Pull down the lower lid of your right eye with the middle finger of the other hand.
3. Place the lens on the lower part (the white) of the eye.
4. Release the lower lid and gently blink.
5. Your lens should now be correctly positioned.

6. Repeat the same procedure for the left eye.

LENS REMOVAL

1. Pull down the lower lid of your right eye with the middle finger of your left hand.

2. Gently touch and squeeze the lens between the tips of the thumb and the index finger of your right hand and remove it.

3. If the lens is not a daily disposable, it should be cleaned, disinfected and placed in a clean case containing some soaking solution.

4. Repeat the same procedure for the left eye.

5. Clean and replace your contact lens case frequently. This is  to prevent the growth of bacteria inside the case.

USE OF COSMETICS

1. Make sure your hands are free from make-up before touching the lenses.

2. Hairspray cannot be removed from soft lenses. So remember to close your eyes when applying it.

3. Try to use solid eye make-up that is not to greasy, as the greasy lotions often leave a smear on the surface. This could affect your comfort and vision.
